Asian handicap betting gives one football team a head start, measured in goals or fractions of a goal, so the draw disappears as a separate result. As a result, you’re left with two outcomes instead of three. This guide explains how Asian handicap lines work, from simple half-goal lines to the quarter-goal splits that confuse most people, with worked examples for each.
Asian handicap in 30 seconds
- The bookmaker adds a handicap to, or takes it from, a team’s score before settling the bet.
- Half-goal lines (−0.5, +1.5) can’t be a tie, so your bet simply wins or loses.
- Whole-goal lines (−1, +2) can land exactly level, and then your stake is refunded.
- Quarter-goal lines (−0.25, −0.75) split your stake across the two nearest lines.
- A handicap of 0 is the same as draw no bet.
What is Asian handicap betting?
In a normal match result bet, there are three outcomes: home win, draw or away win. Asian handicap betting removes the draw by giving the weaker side a goal start, or the stronger side a goal deficit. You then back one team “with” its handicap.
For example, if Arsenal are −1 against Brentford, you take one goal off Arsenal’s final score. A 2–0 Arsenal win becomes 1–0 on the handicap, so a bet on Arsenal −1 wins. A 1–0 Arsenal win becomes 0–0, which is a tie on the handicap, so the stake comes back.
The name comes from bookmakers in Asia, who made the market popular. Today almost every UK bookmaker offers it, as do betting exchanges, usually under “Asian lines” or “Asian handicap”.
Half-goal Asian handicap lines
Half-goal lines are the simplest. Because no team can score half a goal, there is always a winner on the handicap, so there’s no refund.
| Your bet | Wins if | Loses if |
|---|---|---|
| Team −0.5 | Team wins by any margin | Draw or team loses |
| Team +0.5 | Team wins or draws | Team loses |
| Team −1.5 | Team wins by 2 or more | Team wins by 1, draws or loses |
| Team +1.5 | Team wins, draws or loses by 1 | Team loses by 2 or more |
In other words, −0.5 is the same as a straight win bet, and +0.5 is the same as “win or draw” (double chance). However, the Asian handicap price is often a little different from the match result market, so it’s worth comparing both.
Whole-goal lines and refunds
With a whole-goal handicap, the result can land exactly level once the handicap is applied. When that happens, the bet is a “push” and you get your stake back.
Say you bet £10 on Arsenal −1 at 2.30:
- Arsenal win by 2 or more: the bet wins and returns £23.
- Arsenal win by exactly 1: the handicap result is a draw, so you get your £10 back.
- Draw or Arsenal lose: the bet loses.
A handicap of 0 works the same way. If the match ends in a draw, the bookmaker refunds your stake. Draw no bet works in exactly the same way.
Quarter-goal lines explained
Quarter-goal lines such as −0.25, −0.75 or +1.25 are where most people get stuck. The trick is that the bookmaker splits your stake in half. One half goes on the line just below, and the other half on the line just above.
- −0.25 = half on 0 and half on −0.5
- −0.75 = half on −0.5 and half on −1
- +0.25 = half on 0 and half on +0.5
- +1.25 = half on +1 and half on +1.5
Because of the split, you can win half your bet or lose half your bet, as well as win or lose all of it.
Worked examples with quarter lines
Example 1: £10 on Liverpool −0.75 at 2.10. That’s £5 on −0.5 and £5 on −1.
- Liverpool win by 2 or more: both halves win. Return £5 × 2.10 + £5 × 2.10 = £21.
- Liverpool win by exactly 1: the −0.5 half wins (£10.50) and the −1 half is refunded (£5). Return £15.50, a profit of £5.50.
- Draw or Liverpool lose: both halves lose. You lose £10.
Example 2: £10 on Everton +0.25 at 1.85. That’s £5 on 0 and £5 on +0.5.
- Everton win: both halves win. Return £18.50.
- Draw: the +0.5 half wins (£9.25) and the 0 half is refunded (£5). Return £14.25.
- Everton lose: both halves lose. You lose £10.

Why bettors use Asian handicaps
There are three main reasons. First, the market makes a lopsided match more interesting. Backing a heavy favourite at 1.25 rarely appeals, but backing it −1.5 at close to evens might.
Second, with only two outcomes, each side is usually priced closer to evens. Bookmakers often run these markets on a slimmer margin than the three-way match result. This varies, though, so compare prices before you bet.
Third, whole and quarter lines give you some protection. On −1, a one-goal win costs you nothing. On −0.75, it still returns a profit on half your stake.
Asian handicap goal lines
You’ll often see “Asian goal lines” or “Asian totals” next to the handicap market. These apply the same idea to the total number of goals rather than the margin. For instance, over 2.25 goals splits your stake between over 2 and over 2.5. If the match ends with exactly two goals, the over 2 half is refunded and the over 2.5 half loses.
Free bets and qualifying bets
Many sign-up offers ask for a qualifying bet at minimum odds. Asian handicap bets often count, but a pushed or half-refunded bet may not qualify, depending on the terms. Asian handicap FAQ
Your team has to win the match by any margin. A draw or a defeat loses the bet. It is the same outcome as a normal win bet, though the price can differ slightly. On a whole-goal line such as −1 or 0, your stake is refunded. Half-goal lines can’t end level, and quarter-goal lines can leave half your stake refunded. Yes. If your team wins, you win. If the match is a draw, your stake is returned. If your team loses, the bet loses. Half your stake goes on 0 and half on −0.5. If your team wins, both halves win. If it’s a draw, you lose half your stake and get the other half back. It isn’t better or worse in itself. It simply changes which results win, lose or push. The price you get matters most, so compare bookmakers and only bet what you can afford to lose. What does Asian handicap −0.5 mean?
