How to use the each way calculator

  1. First, enter your stake per part. An each-way bet is two equal bets, one to win and one to place. A “£5 each-way” bet costs £10 in total.
  2. Next, type in the odds. Use fractional (10/1), decimal (11.0) or “evens”, exactly as shown on the bet slip.
  3. Then choose the place terms. The bookmaker shows these next to the race or market, for example “1/5 odds, 3 places”.
  4. Add a Rule 4 deduction if needed. However, this only applies if a runner was withdrawn after you placed your bet.
  5. Finally, tick “free bet” if you’re using one. Because free bet stakes aren’t returned, the calculator leaves them out of your returns.

As a result, the table updates as you type. It also shows your total return and profit for all three outcomes, so you can see straight away whether the place part covers your stake.

How each-way returns are worked out

First, the win part is a normal single: stake × odds. Meanwhile, the place part is settled at a fraction of the odds, usually 1/4 or 1/5. For example, 10/1 at 1/5 odds therefore pays the place part at 2/1.

Wins£55£15£70+£60
Places only£0£15£15+£5
Loses£0£0£0−£10

As a rule of thumb, though, the place part only covers your whole stake when the place odds are evens or bigger: 5/1 or longer at 1/5 odds, or 4/1 or longer at 1/4 odds. In other words, at shorter prices you can place and still lose money.

Each way calculator FAQ

What does each-way mean?

An each-way bet is two bets of the same stake: one on your selection to win and one on it to place (finish in the paid places). A £5 each-way bet costs £10.

What are place terms?

The fraction of the win odds paid on the place part, and how many places count. “1/5 odds, 3 places” means the place part pays a fifth of the odds if your selection finishes first, second or third.

What is Rule 4?

If a runner is withdrawn after you bet, the bookmaker deducts an amount from your winnings (not your stake), shown as pence in the pound. It reflects that the race became easier to win.

Can I use a free bet each-way?

Often yes, and the free bet covers both parts. The stake isn’t returned, so tick “free bet” in the calculator to see the real return.
