Matched Betting Explained: How to Turn Free Bets into Profit

Matched betting uses a betting exchange to cover both outcomes of a bet, so bookmaker free bets turn into near-guaranteed profit. How it works, a worked example, the risks, and the two best services to learn it with.

Matched betting is a way of using bookmakers’ free bets and sign-up offers to make a small, near-guaranteed profit. You back a result with the bookmaker and “lay” the same result at a betting exchange, so whichever way the match goes you end up at roughly the same place. Here’s how it works, a worked example with real numbers, the risks nobody mentions, and the two services we recommend if you want to try it.

Matched betting in 30 seconds

  • Back a selection with a bookmaker, e.g. Arsenal to win.
  • Lay the same selection at a betting exchange, i.e. bet on Arsenal not winning.
  • The two bets cancel each other out, so you lose a few pence on the qualifying bet whatever happens.
  • Then you do the same with the free bet, and lock in most of its value as cash.
  • A calculator works out the exact lay stake for you, and you need an exchange account and a little starting money.

How matched betting works

A normal bet has two possible outcomes for you: win or lose. Matched betting removes the guesswork by covering both outcomes. The bookmaker side is your “back” bet: you’re backing something to happen. The exchange side is your “lay” bet: you’re acting as the bookmaker and taking a bet from someone else that it won’t happen.

If you size the lay bet correctly, the money you win on one side almost exactly cancels out what you lose on the other. On its own that’s pointless. The trick is the bookmaker’s free bet: once you have one, you can back and lay again, and because the free bet stake isn’t your money, you keep most of its value whichever side wins.

What you need to start

  1. A betting exchange account. Betfair Exchange, Smarkets and Matchbook are the main UK exchanges. Commission is charged on exchange winnings, typically 2–5%.
  2. Some starting money. £50–£100 is enough to cover a qualifying bet plus the exchange “liability” (the amount you could lose on a lay bet).
  3. A matched betting calculator. It works out the lay stake so both sides balance. The services below include one, along with an “oddsmatcher” that finds the closest back and lay prices.
  4. A debit card. Most welcome offers exclude e-wallets such as PayPal or Skrill, so deposit with a debit card to be safe. Our qualifying bets guide covers the other rules.

A worked matched betting example

Take a typical “bet £10, get a £10 free bet” offer. The figures below assume 2% exchange commission.

Step 1: the qualifying bet

You back Arsenal to win at 3.0 with the bookmaker for £10, and lay Arsenal at 3.1 on the exchange. The calculator gives a lay stake of £9.74, with a liability of £20.45.

ResultBookmakerExchangeOverall
Arsenal win+£20.00−£20.45−£0.45
Arsenal don’t win−£10.00+£9.55−£0.45

You’re down 45p either way. That small “qualifying loss” is the cost of unlocking the free bet.

Step 2: the free bet

Now use the £10 free bet (stake not returned) on a selection at 5.0 and lay it at 5.2. The lay stake is £7.72, with a liability of £32.43.

ResultBookmakerExchangeOverall
Your selection wins+£40.00−£32.43+£7.57
Your selection loses£0+£7.57+£7.57

Take off the 45p qualifying loss and the offer has made you about £7.12, whatever the result. That’s why we show an estimated value on every offer rather than the headline amount: a £10 free bet is worth roughly £7–£8 in cash when it’s matched.

Two things improve the numbers. Use free bets at higher odds (4.0–8.0 is the sweet spot), where the “stake not returned” rule costs you less. And keep the back and lay odds as close together as you can, which is exactly what an oddsmatcher does.

Yes. Matched betting is legal in the UK: you’re simply placing bets and taking up offers the bookmakers advertise. Gambling winnings aren’t taxed in the UK, so matched betting profits aren’t either. Bookmakers don’t like it, though, and they can limit what you’re allowed to bet or stop sending you offers. Your account is still yours and your balance is still withdrawable, but the profitable promotions dry up. Doing it to excess (only ever using offers, always at big odds) makes that happen sooner.

The risks of matched betting

  • Mistakes cost money. Laying the wrong selection, getting the stake wrong or letting odds move before the lay is matched can turn a 45p loss into a £20 one. Double-check before you confirm.
  • Offer terms can void the free bet. Wrong payment method, cashing out, or odds below the minimum and the free bet never arrives, leaving you with only the qualifying loss.
  • You need liability in the exchange. Laying at high odds ties up a lot of money until the event settles.
  • Bank statements. Frequent gambling transactions can be noticed by mortgage lenders, so some people pause before applying for credit.
  • It’s still gambling. If you find yourself placing bets that aren’t matched, or chasing losses, stop. Our responsible gambling page has free tools and support.

Matched betting FAQ

Is matched betting risk free?

The maths is close to risk free when it’s done correctly, because both outcomes are covered. The real risk is human error: laying the wrong selection or stake, or missing an offer term. Start with small, simple offers and use a calculator every time.

How much can you make from matched betting?

Sign-up offers alone are typically worth several hundred pounds in total, because each £10–£30 free bet converts to roughly 70–80% of its value. After that, profits come from ongoing “reload” offers for existing customers, which vary from month to month. Nothing is guaranteed.

Do I have to pay tax on matched betting profits?

In the UK, gambling winnings aren’t taxed, and that includes matched betting profits. If your circumstances are unusual, check with HMRC or an accountant.

Will matched betting affect my credit score?

Matched betting doesn’t appear on your credit file, but mortgage lenders read your bank statements and may ask about frequent gambling transactions. Many people pause for a few months before applying.

Do I need a paid service?

No, you can match offers yourself with a free calculator and an exchange. A paid service such as OddsMonkey or Outplayed mainly saves time: it tracks every offer, explains each one step by step and finds the best matching odds.

18+ only. Free bets and welcome offers are for new customers and T&Cs apply. Matched betting involves real money bets and mistakes can cost you.
