Acca Insurance Explained: How It Works and How to Compare Offers

Acca insurance gives you your stake back, usually as a free bet, if one leg of your accumulator lets you down. How it works, the conditions to check, how to compare offers and how to use it well.

Acca insurance is a bookmaker promotion that refunds your stake if just one leg of your accumulator loses. It’s one of the most common football offers in the UK, and it takes some of the sting out of that familiar “one leg let me down” feeling. Here’s how it works, the conditions to look out for, and how to compare acca insurance offers properly.

Acca insurance in 30 seconds

  • Place an accumulator with enough legs, usually five or more.
  • If exactly one leg loses, you get your stake back.
  • The refund is usually a free bet, not cash, and it’s capped.
  • Each leg normally has to meet a minimum odds rule.
  • If two or more legs lose, there’s no refund. T&Cs apply.

How acca insurance works

An accumulator (acca) links several selections into one bet. Every leg has to win for the bet to pay, and the odds multiply together. That’s what makes the potential returns big. It’s also why accas lose far more often than single bets.

Acca insurance softens the most frustrating outcome: everything wins except one. Instead of losing your whole stake, the bookmaker refunds it, up to a maximum. Usually this comes as a free bet, though a few bookmakers refund in cash.

Here’s a simple example. You place a £10 five-fold football acca with insurance. Four teams win, but one draws. Without insurance, your £10 is gone. With it, you’d typically get a £10 free bet back. If two teams had let you down, though, you’d get nothing.

Typical acca insurance conditions

Every bookmaker sets its own rules, and they change often. Even so, most acca insurance offers are built from the same parts. At the time of writing, these are the usual ranges across UK bookmakers:

ConditionWhat’s typicalWhy it matters
Minimum legsFive is most common; some accept three or fourFewer legs means a better chance of the acca landing
Minimum oddsPer leg (often 1/5 to 1/2) or for the whole accaStops you padding the acca with near-certainties
Maximum refundOften capped around £10–£25Staking above the cap isn’t covered
Refund typeUsually a free bet, occasionally cashA free bet is worth less than cash
MarketsOften football match result only, in selected leaguesBet builders or BTTS legs may not count

Other small print can matter too. Cashing out, even partly, usually voids the insurance. Some offers need you to opt in first. And void legs, such as a postponed match, can drop your acca below the minimum number of legs.

How to compare acca insurance offers

A bigger headline number doesn’t always mean a better deal. Instead, look at how the conditions fit the accas you actually place.

  1. Check the leg count. An offer that covers four-folds is easier to use than one that needs six legs.
  2. Read the odds rule. A per-leg minimum of 1/5 is looser than 1/2. An overall minimum works differently, so check both.
  3. Look at the cap. If you stake £5, a £10 or £25 cap makes no difference. For larger stakes, it does.
  4. Cash or free bet? A cash refund is worth more, because a free bet usually keeps only the winnings, not the stake.
  5. Compare the prices. Insurance is less useful if the bookmaker’s odds are shorter than elsewhere. Our odds comparison helps here.
  6. Confirm the markets. Make sure the leagues and bet types you like are included.

Using acca insurance well

Acca insurance doesn’t turn an accumulator into a good bet on its own. The odds still multiply against you, and most accas still lose. However, it does give you a second chance when you come close.

First, stake within the refund cap. Anything above it isn’t protected, so a £50 acca with a £10 cap is mostly uninsured. Next, avoid legs that only just meet the minimum odds if you wouldn’t back them anyway. Adding a weak leg just to qualify raises the chance of two legs losing.

It also helps to know how the free bet refund works. A £10 free bet is usually “stake not returned”, so it’s worth less than £10 in cash. Our guide to how free bets work explains why. Meanwhile, people who use matched betting treat acca insurance as a separate type of offer with its own maths, which is more involved than a standard free bet.

Finally, set a budget and stick to it. Insurance is there to soften a near miss, not a reason to place more accas than you’d planned.

Acca insurance on welcome offers

Acca insurance is mainly an existing-customer promotion. It’s often attached to weekend football and runs as an ongoing feature. Some welcome offers, though, give new customers free bets that can be used on accas, or add acca boosts on top.

For a sign-up offer, the qualifying bet rules still apply. Some offers require a single, while others accept accas as long as the total odds meet the minimum. Our guide to qualifying bets and minimum odds covers the details. If you mainly bet on accas and bet builders, our acca and bet builder free bets guide and bet builder explainer are worth a read too.

These offers currently work well for acca punters. T&Cs apply to each one:

Acca insurance FAQ

What is acca insurance?

It’s a bookmaker promotion that refunds your stake if exactly one leg of a qualifying accumulator loses. The refund is usually a free bet up to a set maximum, and the acca has to meet the offer’s rules on legs, odds and markets.

Is acca insurance paid in cash or free bets?

Most UK bookmakers refund acca insurance as a free bet. A few pay it back in cash. Check the offer terms, because a cash refund is worth more than a free bet of the same size.

Does acca insurance apply if I cash out?

Usually not. Cashing out, even partially, normally cancels the insurance. The bet has to settle as normal for the refund to apply.

What happens if one leg of my insured acca is void?

The void leg is usually removed and the acca settles with the remaining selections. If that takes it below the minimum number of legs, the insurance may no longer apply.

Is acca insurance worth it?

It adds value to an acca you were going to place anyway, especially when your stake is within the cap. It doesn’t make accumulators likely to win, so it’s not a reason to bet more.

18+ only. Free bets and welcome offers are for new customers and T&Cs apply. Accumulators win less often than singles, so only bet what you can afford to lose.
